Oryx - Fauna Clips
Oct 24, 2011
An Oryx is one of three or four large antelope species of the genus Oryx, typically having long straight almost upright or swept back horns. Two or three of the species are native to Africa, with a fourth native to the Arabian Peninsula. Small populations of several oryx species, such as the "Scimitar Oryx", exist in Texas and New Mexico, USA as captive populations on wild game ranches. The profile of an oryx with perfectly symmetrical horns, especially viewed in silhouette, appears to have only a single horn, which has led to speculation that it may be the source of Unicorn myths[verification needed]. An Arabian Oryx named 'Orry' served as an unofficial mascot of the 2006 Asian Games held at Doha. Oryx eyes are considered beautiful by Arabs of Arabia and are usually used to describe the beauty of women's eyes. In popular culture, a skit on Sesame Street shows six oryx walking by while a group of kids apparently count them. In an episode of Planet Earth, oryxes are trying to chase lions away. In Margaret Atwood's sci-fi dystopia Oryx and Crake, one of the primary characters names herself after the animal. Oryx, along with Lions, Zebras, Leopards, Ostriches, Capuchin Monkeys and an Elephant, can be seen in Shawn Levy's children's movie Night at the Museum, wherein taxidermic models of them at the Museum of Natural History are brought to life each night by an ancient Egyptian curse.
World-beating, Wild, Weird, Web-toed, Wide-Winged and Wonderful, All-Aussie Animals
Nov 04, 2011
For those who don't have the time or opportunity to visit these magnificent Australian inhabitants in their own backyard, please hop on Gruntlesnoot's Magic Carpet and be transported! This is but a small selection of the vast panorama of native Australian animals, birds, reptiles and even insects which will beguile you if some day, you make the journey here. This video was captured in the Jirrahlinga Animal Sanctuary at Barwon Heads, Victoria. Jirralinga not only provides an opportunity for visitors to see a surprisingly varied spectrum of native Australian wild-life but it also provides sanctuary & care for sick or injured native animals & birds. Gruntlesnoot apologises for the notable species which missed out on getting featured on this video ( eg wombats, dingoes etc.) There may be another such video for them in future. -If Gruntlesnoot had to nominate her Australia's got (Fauna) Talent from this selection, then it would definitely be the Tawny Frogmouth performing its dead tree-stump impersonation. (I assure you, doubting Thomases, that this here bird is very much alive!) A close second comes Hissing Syd the Snake - If this were a beauty rather than talent competition, though, Gruntlesnoot would vote first equal to the Echidna and the Turtle who were both gracious enough to smile for the video-camera!
Passionate debate, but dogs top cats in poll
LOS ANGELES - Cats. Dogs. Those can be fighting words in some circles.
Harmony in a House of Cats
Apparently, cats are like potato chips. Stopping at just one isn't easy. On average, cat owners have 2.4 cats, according to the American Pet Product Manufacturer's Association.
Misbehaving Cats Need Schooling
Spraying urine, avoiding the cat box and clawing furniture are just a few kitty behaviors that can grate on the nerves of even the most fervent feline admirers. While these actions make perfect sense to cats, some owners are convinced their cat isn't normal. Others go so far as to think their wayward pet is rebelling or misbehaving out of spite. Perhaps, in frustrated moments, you've felt that way, too. What you may not realize is that you could inadvertently be the cause of your cat's reform-school behaviors.

Indoor Living Changes Cat Food Needs
With food and water served daily, comfortable furniture to curl up on and no immediate threats to safety, indoor cats enjoy a life that outdoor felines, and even some people, seem to envy. But the good life can be hazardous for cats if it leads to weight gain. When left unchecked, those extra pounds can cause serious problems.
Feral feline problem now life-or-death issue
The Athens Area Humane Society will stop accepting feral cats next year, and local officials may turn to a controversial method of neutering and feeding the thousands of wild cats that roam the city.
